Image Compression
Image optimisation is the practice of making an image file smaller without making it look worse. In practice that means three separate operations — compress, resize, convert — and picking the right one first is what stops you degrading a photo you did not need to touch.
Shrink the file size
Use the Compressor first — it re-encodes at a sensible quality and is the fastest route to a smaller file. Reach for a format converter when the win comes from the format itself rather than the quality setting: AVIF and WebP beat JPEG and PNG by a wide margin on the web.
Resize to exact dimensions
Compression changes quality; resizing changes pixel dimensions. If an image is larger than it will ever be displayed, resize first and compress the result — you get a much smaller file than compressing a huge image and letting the browser scale it.
Strip metadata and protect privacy
Photos carry EXIF data — GPS coordinates, device serial numbers, timestamps. If you are publishing someone else’s photo, or your own from a phone, strip that data before it goes anywhere public.
Edit and compose
For light edits — crop, rotate, clean up a background, combine images — these handle the common cases without a desktop editor.
