1. The Quetelet Formula
Imperial: BMI = (Weight lbs × 703) ÷ Height² (in)
Adolphe Quetelet developed this index in 1832 to describe the average person, not to diagnose individuals. The 703 factor in imperial units converts from kg/m² to lbs/in². The squared height makes BMI scale inversely with surface area, which tightens the correlation with body fat at the population level.

- Cardiometabolic markers: fasting glucose, blood pressure, lipid panel — the actual outcomes BMI was meant to predict
