Etiquette, Economics & The Math Behind Tipping
Why tipping exists, what different cultures expect, and how to split the bill fairly for any dining scenario.
1. How Tip Is Calculated
Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tip Amount
Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People
2. Tipping Norms by Country
🇺🇸 US / Canada
18–22% standard for full-service restaurants
🇬🇧 UK / W. Europe
5–10% rounded up; many restaurants add service charge
🇯🇵 Japan / S. Korea
No tipping — it can confuse or offend
🌍 Middle East / S. America
10% common; sometimes added as mandatory service charge
3. Understanding Rounding Modes
- None: exact mathematical split down to cents
- Round Up: each person pays a full extra dollar — the group naturally leaves a higher tip
- Round Down: each person pays less — the group effectively leaves a slightly lower tip
- Nearest Dollar: rounds to the closest dollar — natural and easy for cash payments
