Comprehensive Guide & Reference

Scientific Calculator Guide: Functions, Modes & Best Practices

From DEG vs RAD to memory functions — practical notes for using a scientific calculator effectively.

1. Degrees vs Radians

Mathematicians use radians; engineers and navigators usually use degrees. Toggle DEG/RAD at any time — all trig functions convert automatically. sin(30°) = 0.5 in DEG mode; in RAD mode you would enter sin(π/6) for the same result.

2. Memory Functions

  • M+: Add current result to memory accumulator
  • M−: Subtract current result from memory
  • MR: Recall stored memory value into the expression
  • MC: Clear memory back to zero

3. 2nd Function Mode

Pressing 2nd reveals inverse and secondary functions: sin⁻¹, cos⁻¹, tan⁻¹ (arcsine, arccosine, arctangent), log₂, x² (squaring shortcut), and 10ˣ. These are the most-used secondary functions in engineering and physics.

4. Operator Precedence

  1. Parentheses — always evaluated first
  2. Functions (sin, ln, sqrt, etc.)
  3. Exponentiation (^)
  4. Multiplication & Division
  5. Addition & Subtraction

When in doubt, use parentheses. They are cheap and eliminate all ambiguity.

5. Privacy

🔒 Browser-Only Computation

All expressions evaluate using JavaScript's Math engine in your browser. No computation or history entry ever touches a server.

Frequently Asked Questions

What functions does this scientific calculator support?
Trigonometric (sin, cos, tan + inverses), logarithms (ln, log₁₀, log₂), exponentials (exp, eˣ), square root, cube root, power (xⁿ), factorial, absolute value, floor, ceil, round, and constants π and e.
How do I switch between Degrees and Radians?
Click the DEG/RAD toggle button in the top-right of the display. When in DEG mode, all trig functions accept degrees. When in RAD mode, they accept radians.
How do memory functions work?
M+ adds the current result to memory. M- subtracts it. MR recalls stored memory. MC clears memory. The memory indicator (M) lights up when a value is stored.
How do I use factorial?
Enter a non-negative integer then press x! (e.g. "5!" evaluates to 120). Large factorials above ~170 may exceed JavaScript numeric precision.
Does it support keyboard input?
Yes. Type directly into the display area. Press Enter or = to evaluate. Backspace removes the last character. Operators and numbers all work from the keyboard.
What does the 2nd function (2nd) button do?
Pressing 2nd reveals inverse functions: sin⁻¹, cos⁻¹, tan⁻¹, log₂, x² (square), and 10ˣ. Press 2nd again to toggle back to primary functions.
What is the history panel?
The last 20 calculations are shown in the history panel. Click any history entry to reload that expression. Click Clear History to wipe all entries.
Is my computation data private?
Yes. Every expression is evaluated using JavaScript Math within your browser. No expression or result ever touches a server.
