1. The Canonical ROI Formula
Where net profit = (Final Value − Initial Value − Costs). Costs include not only the purchase price but also fees, taxes carried, maintenance, storage, insurance, and any other capital deployed to make the investment work. A 100% total return over 5 years is really a 14.87% CAGR — fine, but not sensational. A 25% one-year return is a 25% CAGR — clearly superior. Always annualize before comparing. A campaign with 4× ROAS could easily have negative ROI if fulfillment costs are large relative to margins. A 4× ROAS on a 25% gross-margin product means $4 in revenue against $1 in ad cost — but $3 of that revenue is consumed by COGS, fulfillment, and overhead, leaving you with 75 cents on the dollar before the ad cost, or 25 cents net. 5. Risk-Adjusted ROI: The Benchmark Test
A"good" ROI lives relative to its peer set and risk profile. Useful benchmarks:
- Risk-free rate — typically the 10-year Treasury yield (~4-5%). Anything less means you could have stayed in cash-equivalents and slept better.
- Market index — S&P 500 has averaged ~10% nominal since 1928. Anything significantly below that in equity investments needs justification.
- Required hurdle rate — depending on your cost of capital. A small business owner borrowing at 12% should not accept any investment under 18-20% ROI to compensate for risk.
- Real (inflation-adjusted) return — anything less than the real return of a passive index fund isn't worth the active risk for most investors.

7. Common ROI Mistakes to Avoid
- Survivorship bias: averaging winners ignores losers. A 5× return on one stock means nothing if you lost 5× on five others.
- Ignoring fees: a 1% annual fee on a 7% portfolio return over 30 years costs ~25% of your final balance. Fees compound against you.
- Forgetting taxes: 15% long-term gains tax on a 50% return leaves you with 42.5% — still good, but not 50%.
- Cherry-picking dates:"10-year return" depends on starting and ending date. A 10-year return from 2009-2019 is very different from 2014-2024.
- Ignoring risk: a 30% ROI with a 60% drawdown along the way may not be worth the stress compared to a steady 8% return.
